Aquarium Volume & Weight Calculator

Calculate aquarium volume, water volume, substrate weight, and total weight when full to ensure your floor can handle the load.

How full the tank is with water
Substrate/gravel depth in cm
Substrate density. Gravel ~1.5, Sand ~1.7 kg/L

๐Ÿ“–What is it?

The Aquarium Volume Calculator computes the total and effective water volume of your tank, accounting for substrate displacement, and estimates total weight when filled to help you choose an appropriate stand and confirm floor load capacity.

๐ŸŽฏHow to use

Enter tank dimensions in cm, fill level, substrate depth, and substrate density. The calculator outputs total volume, effective water volume (excluding substrate space), and estimated full weight.

๐Ÿ’กExample scenario

A 120x40x50 cm tank = 240 L total. With 5 cm gravel substrate and 90% fill: water volume รขโ€ฐห† 194 L. Water weight (salt) = 199 kg + 36 kg substrate + 120 kg glass estimate = ~355 kg total.

๐Ÿ†Pro tip

Floor load capacity in residential buildings is typically 200-300 kg/mร‚ยฒ. A 240L reef tank can easily exceed 400 kg. Place large tanks along load-bearing walls or have a structural engineer assess. For saltwater tanks, water density is 1.025 kg/L vs 1.0 for fresh. Surface area (not volume) determines how many fish a tank can support รขโ‚ฌโ€ more surface area = more gas exchange.
