What is it?
Coast FIRE is the point where your current portfolio is large enough that — invested and left alone — it will compound to your full FIRE Number by your target retirement age. Once you reach Coast FIRE, you only need to cover living expenses; you no longer need to save for retirement.
How to use
Enter your target FIRE Number, your current portfolio value, the expected annual return (7% is a common long-term inflation-adjusted assumption), and the number of years until retirement. The calculator shows how much you need today to "coast" to FIRE.
Example scenario
To reach $1,000,000 in 25 years at 7% real returns, your Coast FIRE Number is about $184,249. If you have $150,000, you still need approximately $34,249 more before you can coast.
Pro tip
Coast FIRE is a powerful milestone because it decouples your day job from retirement saving. Once coasted, you can take a lower-stress job, work part-time, or pursue passion projects — you just need to cover current expenses.
