What is it?
The D&D 5e Point Buy system gives you 27 points to distribute across 6 ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma). Each score starts at 8 (free). Scores 8-13 cost 1 point per value; score 14 costs 7 total points (1 extra over 13); score 15 costs 9 total points. Maximum is 15 before racial bonuses.
How to use
Set each ability score using the number inputs (minimum 8, maximum 15). The calculator tracks your total points spent and remaining budget. Ability modifiers (floor((score-10)/2)) are calculated for STR, DEX, CON, and WIS. Keep remaining points at or above 0 for a legal build.
Example scenario
A Wizard build: STR 8 (0pts), DEX 14 (7pts), CON 13 (5pts), INT 15 (9pts), WIS 12 (4pts), CHA 8 (0pts) = 25 points spent, 2 remaining. Add racial bonuses afterwards. The WIS 12 gives +1 saving throw; INT 15 becomes 17 with +2 racial for a +3 modifier.
Pro tip
Point buy creates balanced characters and prevents lucky stat arrays from dominating. Score 15 (+2 racial = 17, +1 ASI = 18) is a common optimization target for a primary stat. Avoid dumping Constitution below 12 ? hit points and concentration saves matter for every class. The system favours multiple moderate stats over one extreme high score.
