What is it?
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This calculator is for informational purposes ONLY. Always call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) immediately if your dog ate chocolate, regardless of this calculator's result. The calculator estimates theobromine/methylxanthine dose based on chocolate type and dog body weight. Toxic thresholds: above 20 mg/kg = mild symptoms, above 40 mg/kg = severe, above 60 mg/kg = seizure risk.
How to use
Enter your dog's weight, select the type of chocolate eaten (dark chocolate is far more dangerous than milk chocolate), and enter how much was eaten in grams. DO NOT use this result as a reason not to call the vet.
Example scenario
A 10 kg dog eats 50g of milk chocolate: 50 x 0.44 = 22 mg theobromine. 22 / 10 = 2.2 mg/kg รขโฌโ below the 20 mg/kg threshold (Risk Level 1). However, the same dog eating 50g of baking chocolate: 50 x 16 = 800 mg, 800/10 = 80 mg/kg รขโฌโ Risk Level 4 (Critical emergency).
Pro tip
Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) or your emergency vet IMMEDIATELY. Do not wait for symptoms. Symptoms of theobromine poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, excessive urination, muscle tremors, and seizures รขโฌโ and can appear 6-12 hours after ingestion. Never induce vomiting without veterinary guidance.
