What is it?
The Flight Carbon Offset Calculator estimates the CO2-equivalent emissions from your flight using ICAO average emission factors (0.115 kg CO2 per km per economy passenger), adjusting for cabin class and round-trip travel.
How to use
Enter the one-way flight distance, number of passengers, cabin class, and whether it is a round trip. Business class uses 2x the emission factor (more space per seat), and first class uses 4x.
Example scenario
A one-way 5,000 km flight in economy for 1 passenger: 5,000 x 0.115 x 1.0 x 1 = 575 kg CO2 (0.575 tonnes). At $15/tonne, offset cost = $8.63.
Pro tip
The true climate impact of aviation is 2-4x the CO2 number alone due to radiative forcing effects at altitude (contrails, NOx, water vapor). Look for Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified offset projects — these are independently audited. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a more direct solution but currently very limited in supply.
