Gravel & Crushed Stone Calculator
Calculate the volume in cubic metres and weight in tonnes of gravel, crushed stone, sand, or river rock needed to fill a defined area to a specific depth.

What is it?
A gravel calculator computes the volume and weight of loose aggregate materials gravel, crushed stone, sand, or river rock needed to fill a rectangular area. Volume is straightforward (length x width x depth), but suppliers quote by the tonne, so density conversion is essential.
How to use
Enter the length and width of the area in metres, the required depth in centimetres, and select the material type. The density values are approximate industry averages confirm with your supplier. The result is displayed in both cubic metres (for checking skip/delivery sizes) and tonnes (for ordering).
Example scenario
A 10 x 5 m driveway filled with 10 cm of crushed stone: volume = 5 m3. At 1.8 t/m3, that is 9 tonnes of crushed stone. A standard tipper truck carries 810 tonnes, so one load is sufficient.
Pro tip
Gravel compacts roughly 1520% after being driven on. For driveways or paths, order 15% more than the calculated volume to account for compaction and topping up. A layer of geotextile fabric beneath the gravel prevents it from sinking into soft soil over time.
