What is it?
The Investment Income Calculator shows how much income a portfolio generates at a given withdrawal rate. If withdrawals exceed growth, it estimates how many years before the portfolio is depleted. The famous "4% rule" suggests withdrawing 4% annually for a ~30-year retirement.
How to use
Enter your total portfolio value, expected annual return, and your desired annual withdrawal percentage. The calculator shows annual/monthly income, portfolio growth, and whether your withdrawals are sustainable.
Example scenario
A $500,000 portfolio earning 7% with a 4% withdrawal rate generates $20,000/year ($1,667/month). Growth is $35,000/year, so the portfolio actually increases by $15,000/year — it is sustainable indefinitely at these rates.
Pro tip
If "Years to Depletion" shows 999, your portfolio grows faster than you withdraw — it will never run out. Consider adjusting withdrawal rate to 3.5% for extra safety margin during market downturns.
