📖What is it?

Metal weight is calculated from the volume of the piece multiplied by the material's density. For rectangular sections (plates, flat bars, square bar), this is a simple length × width × thickness calculation. Knowing the weight is essential for structural design, freight quoting, and material ordering.

🎯How to use

Enter the length, width, and thickness of your rectangular metal piece in millimetres, then select the material. The calculator converts the volume from mm³ to cm³ and multiplies by the material density (g/cm³) to give weight in kilograms and pounds.

💡Example scenario

A 1000 mm × 100 mm × 10 mm mild steel flat bar: Volume = 1,000,000 mm³ = 1,000 cm³. Weight = 1,000 × 7.85 / 1000 = 7.85 kg (17.3 lbs). Useful when calculating loads on shelving or checking freight weight limits.

🏆Pro tip

Aluminium is approximately 1/3 the weight of steel for the same volume — a major factor in lightweight design. Stainless steel is slightly heavier than mild steel but is often used in thinner gauges. For non-rectangular cross-sections (rounds, tubes, angles), calculate volume separately and multiply by density.
