What is it?
The Reading Time Calculator estimates how long it will take to read a piece of text given its word count and your reading speed in words per minute (wpm). It is useful for scheduling reading sessions, estimating podcast or audiobook durations, and planning blog or article content for your audience.
How to use
Enter the total word count of the text (use your word processor's built-in word count tool). Then select your reading speed — or the speed of your intended audience. The result is the estimated reading time in total minutes, broken into hours and minutes.
Example scenario
A typical long-read article is about 5,000 words. At the average 238 wpm pace, it takes about 21 minutes. If you are a fast reader at 400 wpm, you will finish in about 12.5 minutes. A full novel at 80,000 words takes the average reader about 5.6 hours.
Pro tip
Content creators often display estimated reading times on blog posts. Research shows readers are more likely to start an article if the time commitment is stated upfront. Aim for 5–7 minute reads (around 1,200–1,700 words) for peak engagement on digital platforms. The Spritz speed-reading technique (displaying one word at a time at the optimal recognition point) claims to double reading speeds without comprehension loss — useful for reviewing material you already partially know.
