What is it?
Abrasive blasting (sandblasting) is the primary method of surface preparation before industrial coatings. The amount of blasting media consumed depends on the target surface profile depth, number of passes, and media type. Proper preparation to Sa 2.5 or Sa 3 standard is critical for coating adhesion and corrosion protection life.
How to use
Enter the total surface area to be blasted, target profile depth (determined by your coating specification), media consumption rate for your chosen abrasive, and the number of passes required. A 15% waste factor is automatically added to the order quantity.
Example scenario
Blasting 50 m of steel structure to Sa 3 (75m profile) with steel grit at 1.5 kg/m, 2 passes: Net media = 150 kg. Order 173 kg (with waste). Estimated blasting time 12.5 hours at 8 m/hr productivity.
Pro tip
Steel grit is recyclable (15-30 cycles) and gives better profile than expendable abrasives. Copper slag and garnet are single-use but produce less dust. Always blast in dry conditions (relative humidity below 85%) and within 4 hours of rain. Apply primer coating within 4 hours of blasting to prevent flash rust.
